Two volumes issued as complete in 1916. Sales flyer from Houghton Mifflin describes this set and other biographies. Illustrated with b&w photgraphs and a color frontis in each volume, Indexed. Green boards with gold lettering on the spines and front, top edges gilt. Plain jackets, with lettering on the spines indicate that the set was priced at $3.00. Jackets have edgewear and a piece torn out of each, now protected in mylar, jacket spines are darkened.

Each volume 9 1/2" x 12", bound in dark brown buckram with 3/4 leather. marbled endpapers. Bright gold lettering on front of each, gold lettering on spines, leather is rubbed and deteriorating on spines and corners. Interiors contain full page b&w photogravures, wood-engravings and typogravures, each with a tissue protector which is printed with the subject of the illustration. Volume 1 has a 3" loss of leather on the spine and a 1" x 1 1/2" chip missing from the back. Volume 4 has a loosening front hinge. All interiors crisp and unmarked.

Number 55 of 925 copies that were printed and specially hand illumed, Elbert Hubbard's signature. Title page plus 5 initial blocks, beautifuuly done in color. B&W frontis portrait of Johnson, tissue guard is loose. Brown suede binding is lightly soiled with worn edges, gold lettering on the front. Silk endpapers, blank endpapers are browning, ribbon marker is detached. Neat gift inscription on ffep dated 1900. There is also a photograph tucked inside, which I presume is Jessie, the person who wrote the gift inscription. Pages numbered 119 to 144. Handmade paper, tiny bit of foxing.
